Like all other things in this experience we call life, love is a mindset. Brotherly love is a decision we make from a made-up mind that’s been washed by the WORD of GOD, teaching us how to love from healthy spiritual appropriateness.
It is not a matter of whether or not we are capable of loving our brothers, it essentially boils down to whether or not our behavior towards our brothers is acceptable to GOD or not.
Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. Psalm 15
The concern is with the neighbor. This man does not take up a reproach against his neighbor. The only way a man will be able to stand before GOD is if he has exercised himself in the way of righteous behavior towards his BROTHER.
Brotherly Love must be cultivated right along with faith, right along with knowledge. How can you love your brother if you do not know how? How can you know how if GOD does not teach you?
This man walks upright. This man works righteousness. This man speaks the truth in his heart. If he is not truthful with himself in his heart, he cannot show love to anyone.
To Thine Own Self Be True
Polonius coined a popular quote in the historically esteemed writing of William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. In Act 1, scene III Polonius says, ““This above all: to thine own self be true. And it must follow, as the night the day
Thou canst not then be false to any man/Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!”
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ 2 Peter 1
